Each
class, I will bring in current, recent English articles and media to
help us practice our English conversation skills. We'll discuss the
issues, how they relate to what we already know, and connect these
topics to language learning skills.
We review topical
articles together, discuss them, and share our opinions. We usually
cover 2-3 different articles a week. Articles often center around a hot
issue or topic for a week, then move on to other interests. We might
also listen to a podcast with transcripts related to something we've been discussing too. Everything is linked with QR codes so you can find the original articles and study them on your own with whatever tools you'd like to use to practice.
This
class will use content from a variety of sources given in advance for
students to study before the class. For example, if we discuss an
article about a topic, we might highlight the most difficult expressions
or less frequent vocabulary being used or preview the topic so we can
be familiar before we start the discussion. This class is meant to ease
students into sharing their opinions in class.
This is meant to
be a class full of chances for participation. If you are approaching the
class to be a passive listener, expect to share your ideas with us. I
want you to feel comfortable, so let me know about content or interests
you'd like to follow up on after we cover it. Some students take time to
get used to the discussion style, but just speak up when you have an
interesting idea related the topic! Even if you are just asking for
clarification or an explanation rather than sharing a comment, that's
OK! Do your best to contribute to the class every day. |
